NMS Mock Courtroom - Tax Deductible Donations

The Nova Middle School PTSA is requesting your continued support of the state  of the art mock courtroom that we have on our campus! Nova Middle School is one of very few public schools in Broward County with a full-sized mock courtroom. The mock courtroom includes a full sized, wood-paneled courtroom, replete with a jury box, witness stand, and judge’s bench. This courtroom is used by our Nova Middle School Legal Studies Department as they launch their legal careers. The mock courtroom is also available for various debates and technologically equipped for local, national, even international broad- casting of debates and mock trial presentations.

Permanent recognition of your personal tax deductible donation will be made in the form of personalized law books painted on the walls of our courtroom. Our talented art teacher created a mural of law books on bookshelves to replicate the look of a law library. The books will be painted in the order that the forms and payment are received. Each $100 donation will be recognized by a name of the donor’s choosing, being painted on the spine of the book. Example:

In memory of__________ In honor of____________ The ____________ Family

For an additional $50 donation, you also have the option to add graphics (e.g. Titan logo, college logo, scales of justice). Please submit a non-returnable copy of the exact logo to be painted.

Corporate sponsorship opportunities are also available. Please visit the Estore tab of the PTSA Website for information on levels of corporate sponsorship.

Please send your tax deductible donation to Nova Middle School PTSA at 3602 College Avenue, Davie, FL 33314. Payment can be made by credit card on our Estore.

Thank you for your continued support!

Nova Middle School creates student schedules with careful consideration to each student’s academic level and areas of interest. In order to provide consistency for parents, students, and teachers, schedule changes will be kept to a minimum. Before making a request, please review the information below to assure that you fully understand the schedule change policy.

Requesting a schedule change:

In the rare event that a schedule change is needed, a schedule change request form must be submitted to the front office. No request may be made through personal meetings, phone calls, or emails. It’s not unheard of to find a middle school that has a legal studies program. Nova Middle School in Davie ups the ante, though, because it has just installed a life-sized, completely realistic courtroom in a classroom.

"The courtroom has given our students the chance to be in a real-life setting every day they’re in class," said the school’s principal, Dr. Jermaine Fleming.

It’s the heart of Nova’s legal studies program. 240 seventh and eighth graders are learning all aspects of law. The courtroom becomes an indispensable tool, with students learning the roles of prosecutors, defense attorneys, jurors and judges.

"They get a lot of in-trial, in-court experience, so it’s not just about litigation, but it’s probably the most exciting thing that they want to do," legal studies teacher Chris Relyea said.

On the day NBC 6 visited, a student was on trial, arguing for a higher grade on his essay assignment. That’s just one of the ways they utilize the courtroom to teach the principles of litigation, which has a ripple effect of benefits.

"This class does a really great job of getting these kids prepared for research, interpersonal skills, public speaking," Relyea said. "They do more writing in there than probably any other class, it's a lot of real world experience."

"The over-arching benefit is they become better citizens," Dr. Fleming said.

The courtroom itself if brand new, built entirely with donated money, including a $10,000 check from a legal and medical referral company. That’s why the courtroom is officially called the “411 Pain Courtroom."

Dr. Fleming said the legal studies program goes hand-in-hand with the school’s debate program. Many students are enrolled in both, which he says is great training whether they go into law as adults or any other field.

“A big part of school now has become the confidence that you need to present yourself, and to interview for a job and to speak eloquently when you need to," Dr. Fleming said.

One of the program’s teachers, Eli Atlas, was a lawyer before he left that profession. Now he’s sort of doing both, teaching law to students eager to learn it.

Anyone who wants their child in the program has to sign up for Nova’s lottery system. Nova is not a magnet school. Admissions are determined by the luck of draw, but anyone in Broward is eligible to try. The deadline for signups, for Nova’s lottery and all Broward County Public Schools magnet programs, is February (11th.)

Safety in the Carpool Lane!

During the first few weeks of drop-off and pickup, heavy traffic is expected.  Thank you in advance for your patience and observance of the following safety rules.

* A reminder to please follow the carpool rules for our children’s safety. Cars must proceed through the carpool lane. Unattended cars cannot be parked in the lane. Cars cannot park on the grass or block parking spots. During carpool hours, all cars must make a RIGHT turn when exiting. Tickets will be issued for failure to comply.

* Please note that the lane entering the school is ONE WAY only.

* When leaving the school, there is only ONE exit lane. DO NOT drive next to the other cars and then merge right into the exit lane (and cutting off all other patiently waiting cars!)

* When Officer Smith is conducting traffic and waving cars forward, he is trying to keep traffic moving and requests that if he is telling your car to proceed, please do not stop, wave, talk ... it is disruptive to the flow of traffic. Keep driving!
