Florida PTA / Governor Scott's Action Plan

Florida PTA – Governor Scott’s Action Plan

February 23, 2018

This afternoon Governor Scott announced his action plan to start specific measures to keep our students and our communities safer. Florida PTA was fortunate to be chosen, among select state and local leaders, to have a voice in the Education Workshop which helped to develop many elements of this plan.

Florida PTA feels confident that this is a major step in the right direction, with the Governor's commitment to limit the accessibility of firearms to anyone who may be a danger to themselves or others. He has also committed to increase funding for the Safe Schools Appropriations Allocation, to be utilized by each school district for the purpose of "hardening" measures that can increase security in our schools. One of our most earnest and repeated requests has been to have more counseling and mental health resources specifically designated to identify and support at-risk students and the Governor listened. There will be dedicated mental health counselors to provide direct services to students at every school, and this will be their only role.

Florida PTA concurs that the presence of trained, dedicated law enforcement personnel on campus is the right course of action. Their partnership, in preparing our schools to prevent another tragedy will be paramount.

Florida PTA agrees with Governor Scott when he says that open dialogue is critical. There is nothing more important than the safety of our most precious resource, our children. While Florida PTA maintains strong positions that were not included in this initial plan, we support the implementation of these measures immediately. Our students have demanded to feel safer while in our care and we are obligated to make that happen.

Statement from Florida PTA President

Statement from Florida PTA President, Cindy Gerhardt re: Shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas H.S., Broward County, Florida.

This afternoon (2/14) I received a text that no one who leads the largest child advocacy association in this state would ever want to read.  The school shooting tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has set each and every parent, grandparent, sibling, family and community member back on their heels.  The heaviness of this horrific act has suffocated us with grief, sadness, hopelessness and hurt.

Florida PTA has a long and successful legacy of fighting for the safety, health and well-being of ALL children in our state, but today we feel like we have fallen short.  Children left their homes that will never return.  Our hearts are mourning for each and every victim and their families and loved ones.  There are simply no words that one can offer at this time to a mother who has lost her baby boy, or a father who has lost his Valentine.  Our minds are struggling to find answers but more importantly, our determination is stronger than ever to ensure that this tragic moment is never repeated.  Our children are not statistics and enough weeping has occurred to fill the Gulf that surrounds our state.  Enough.

While you may not recognize the faces or know the names, each and every person involved will be impacted in ways we cannot fathom and they will need our support.  Kim Potanovic, PTSA President at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School says, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the victims of this horrific event.  We condemn this senseless loss of life, and we plan to do whatever we can to help the staff, students and families affected by this tragedy."

We ask that you please keep them in your hearts and find ways to honor them with your advocacy and actions.

NMS Mock Courtroom - Tax Deductible Donations

The Nova Middle School PTSA is requesting your continued support of the state  of the art mock courtroom that we have on our campus! Nova Middle School is one of very few public schools in Broward County with a full-sized mock courtroom. The mock courtroom includes a full sized, wood-paneled courtroom, replete with a jury box, witness stand, and judge’s bench. This courtroom is used by our Nova Middle School Legal Studies Department as they launch their legal careers. The mock courtroom is also available for various debates and technologically equipped for local, national, even international broad- casting of debates and mock trial presentations.

Permanent recognition of your personal tax deductible donation will be made in the form of personalized law books painted on the walls of our courtroom. Our talented art teacher created a mural of law books on bookshelves to replicate the look of a law library. The books will be painted in the order that the forms and payment are received. Each $100 donation will be recognized by a name of the donor’s choosing, being painted on the spine of the book. Example:

In memory of__________ In honor of____________ The ____________ Family

For an additional $50 donation, you also have the option to add graphics (e.g. Titan logo, college logo, scales of justice). Please submit a non-returnable copy of the exact logo to be painted.

Corporate sponsorship opportunities are also available. Please visit the Estore tab of the PTSA Website for information on levels of corporate sponsorship.

Please send your tax deductible donation to Nova Middle School PTSA at 3602 College Avenue, Davie, FL 33314. Payment can be made by credit card on our Estore.

Safety in the Carpool Lane!

During the first few weeks of drop-off and pickup, heavy traffic is expected.  Thank you in advance for your patience and observance of the following safety rules.

* A reminder to please follow the carpool rules for our children’s safety. Cars must proceed through the carpool lane. Unattended cars cannot be parked in the lane. Cars cannot park on the grass or block parking spots. During carpool hours, all cars must make a RIGHT turn when exiting. Tickets will be issued for failure to comply.

* Please note that the lane entering the school is ONE WAY only.

* When leaving the school, there is only ONE exit lane. DO NOT drive next to the other cars and then merge right into the exit lane (and cutting off all other patiently waiting cars!)

* When Officer Smith is conducting traffic and waving cars forward, he is trying to keep traffic moving and requests that if he is telling your car to proceed, please do not stop, wave, talk ... it is disruptive to the flow of traffic. Keep driving!
